Tsavo National Park

Tsavo National Park: A Vast Wilderness of Wildlife and Scenic Beauty

Tsavo National Park, one of the largest and most iconic wildlife reserves in Kenya, spans an impressive 22,000 square kilometers, making it one of the largest national parks in the world. Located in southeastern Kenya, Tsavo is divided into two main sections—Tsavo East and Tsavo West—each offering distinct landscapes and wildlife experiences. Tsavo is famous for its drought-resistant landscapes, including savannahs, semi-arid plains, volcanic hills, and the Galana River, which creates a critical water source for wildlife.

The park is renowned for its large populations of elephants, often referred to as the “red elephants” because of the reddish dust they bathe in, which gives them a distinctive color. Tsavo is also home to an impressive array of wildlife, including the Big Fivelions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinos—as well as a variety of other species such as giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, and antelopes. The park is particularly famous for its Tsavo lions, which gained notoriety during the 1910s for their involvement in the man-eating incident at the Tsavo railway construction site.

Tsavo National Park offers a variety of safari experiences, including game drives, walking safaris, and guided bush treks. Key attractions within the park include the Mzima Springs, a freshwater spring that supports abundant wildlife and is known for its underwater hippo-viewing experience, and the Sheldrick Falls, a beautiful waterfall located in Tsavo West. The best time to visit is during the dry season (June to October) when wildlife is easier to spot, as animals gather around waterholes. Tsavo National Park offers a truly immersive wilderness experience with its vast landscapes, abundant wildlife, and remote beauty, making it a must-see destination for safari enthusiasts.
