Matobo National Park

Matobo National Park: Zimbabwe’s Land of Ancient Hills and Wildlife

Matobo National Park, located in southern Zimbabwe, is one of the country’s most unique and scenic wildlife reserves. Covering over 3,100 square kilometers, the park is famous for its dramatic granite rock formations, known as the Matobo Hills. These ancient balancing rocks, shaped by millions of years of erosion, create a stunning landscape filled with caves, deep valleys, and rolling hills. The park is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its rich cultural and historical significance, including prehistoric San rock art found in caves like Nswatugi and Pomongwe.

Matobo is home to one of Africa’s largest populations of white and black rhinos, making it a prime destination for rhino tracking on foot. Other wildlife includes leopards, giraffes, zebras, and antelopes, while the park’s high concentration of Verreaux’s eagles makes it a haven for bird lovers. Matobo is also the final resting place of Cecil Rhodes, the British colonialist who named Zimbabwe as Rhodesia, with his grave located at World’s View, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the park.

Visitors can explore Matobo National Park through game drives, guided walking safaris, and cultural tours to learn about the area’s rich history. The best time to visit is during the dry season (May to October) for better wildlife viewing, while the green season (November to April) enhances the beauty of the landscapes. Whether admiring ancient rock art, tracking rhinos, or enjoying the stunning scenery, Matobo National Park offers a blend of nature, history, and adventure, making it a must-visit destination in Zimbabwe.
