Samburu National Park, located in the northern part of Kenya, is a unique and beautiful wildlife reserve that offers a truly authentic safari experience. Situated along the Ewaso Ng’iro River, the park covers an area of 165 square kilometers and is known for its rugged terrain, arid landscapes, and rich wildlife. It is part of the larger Samburu Game Reserve and is famous for being home to a variety of wildlife species that are not easily found in other parts of Kenya, including the “Samburu Special Five”: the Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, giraffe gazelle, reticulated giraffe, and Somali ostrich.
Samburu’s diverse wildlife, combined with its stunning landscapes, makes it one of the most photogenic safari destinations in Kenya. The park is home to the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino—as well as a variety of other species such as cheetahs, wild dogs, and hippos. Samburu is also an excellent destination for birdwatchers, with over 350 species of birds, including African fish eagles, vultures, and hornbills.
The Ewaso Ng’iro River, a vital lifeline in the dry region, provides excellent wildlife sightings, particularly during the dry season (June to October), when animals congregate around water sources. Visitors can enjoy game drives, guided bush walks, and even cultural visits to nearby Samburu communities, learning about their rich traditions. The best time to visit Samburu is during the dry months when wildlife is more concentrated around the river. With its stunning landscapes, rich wildlife, and peaceful atmosphere, Samburu National Park offers an unforgettable safari experience in northern Kenya.
